Solutions and Impact

SOLUTIONS

The Adjustable Base Accommodating intraocular Lens (ABAL) solves two problems, long considered Gordian knots in the medical profession, by providing:

  • An elegant solution for presbyopia and
  • A permanent surgical solution for myopia prior to the age of forty.

ABAL introduces the era of light-energy powered and remotely controlled Intra Ocular Lenses (IOLs).

The ABAL concept is very simple.

The focus adjustment unit is the same as those used, by the billion for a decade, in autofocusing smartphone cameras.

This unit is housed in a standard form and materials IOL, as implanted by the million for decades.

The ‘reading’ mode is triggered by any suitable transmitting device, be it smartphone, remote button on a ring or pendant, IVR or a completely unobtrusive dental button.

Compensation for myopia ‘drift’ is also managed by simple remote control.

Power is provided by a slender high-efficiency multi-layer photoelectric ring placed at the circumference of the IOL.

The most immediate application of ABAL will improve the outcomes of currently performed cataract lens replacement procedures - by providing remote controlled, post-surgical fine tuning of the patient’s vision.

The most significant applications of ABAL start at the critical age 40 juncture – when:

  • Presbyopia begins to afflict every human being, and
  • Myopia stabilizes i.e. a myopic person’s correcting diopter value becomes fixed.

An ABAL implant above the age of 40 provides a comprehensive solution:

  • It provides perfectly tuned far vision for all, including myopic patients
  • It provides an elegant, remote button triggered solution for presbyopia
  • It preempts the need for subsequent cataract lens replacement procedures in later life.

The earliest age applications of ABAL begin with post-adolescence, when the growing eye becomes dimensionally stable. This is nominally set at age 20. Here, the ‘adjustable base’ feature is used to its full potential.

Once implanted in a myopic patient’s eye, any corrective diopter ‘drift’ through age 40 can be remotely compensated. This also negates the current cumbersome ‘lens swapping refraction’ procedures.

IMPACT

ABAL impact on the vision correction industry will be significant:

  • An elegant improvement on standard cataract surgery
  • The potential to render LASIK surgery obsolete
  • A genuine, permanent alternative to spectacles/contacts for myopia and presbyopia
